The Magical Maltese Experience
Plus Gozo
Sat 2nd May – Wed 6th May 2009May Bank Holiday weekend
Malta has a long tradition in Medicine from the Knights Hospitaller to the "Nurse of the Mediterranean" during the Crimean War and this beautiful island is steeped in history from prehistoric, Roman, Arabic and of course the Knights of St John making it a perfect location for the May Bank Holiday Conference Plus special Continuing Medical Education Programme.
With 360 Churches there is always a spire around the corner and superb architecture with narrow streets lined by quaint houses resplendent with shuttered balconies. Valetta’s Grand Harbour is magnificent but the water is also a feature of the Three Cities and the charming bays. There is a distinct Venetian influence in some of the small boats.
The nearby sister island of Gozo is a short ferry trip away and will be part of the optional tour programme as will be the beautiful old capital city of Mdina. The British heritage is still evident in the red post boxes and telephone boxes, driving on the left as well as the old Bedford buses which hail from a bygone era.
The conference will be based at the 5 star Hilton Hotel in St Julian’s Bay known to be the best hotel on the island, which has wonderful facilities that include indoor and outdoor pools, spa and gym, tennis courts, scuba diving centre and superb views of the yacht marina and the bay. Upgrade to a sea view room for a small supplement, but hurry as only a few rooms available.

Highlights
Valletta – St John’s Co-Cathedral was built by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century and it has one of the most ornate interiors of any European building. The cathedral houses many tapestries, plus Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of John the Baptist. The Grand Masters’ Palace was the Knights’ headquarters for over 200 years and is an impressive building housing one of the finest collections of early weaponry.
Three Cities – Malta has many walled settlements but one of the most interesting can be found by Grand Harbour, where three districts – Cospicua, Vittoriosa and Senglea – are encased within the Cottonera Lines fortifications with their labyrinth of streets, battlements, monuments and squares.
Mdina – One of the best preserved walled cities in Europe and built by Sicilian Arabs more than 1,000 years ago. Mdina has barely changed throughout the centuries. Lit by iron lamps at night, it offers amazing views from the walls and the impressive Cathedral of St Paul is situated in grand surroundings in front of a large square.
St Julian’s – Where our hotel is based, is a former fishing village stretching around beautiful Spinola Bay has retained its charm and elegance as well as being the location of lovely restaurants, cafes & shops dotted along the shoreline with beautiful views.
