Post-conference Extensions - Annapurna Trek, Bhutan & Golden Triangle

The Dowling Club was established by Dr Geoffrey Dowling, a London dermatologist, in the late 1940’s. The ethos of the club is to bring consultants and trainee dermatologists together in learning and social environments sharing the knowledge and experience of established specialists with those starting their training within the specialty.

A highlight of the Dowling Club programme is the annual overseas trip which combines visits to overseas dermatology departments and/or clinical meetings with the opportunity for seniors and juniors to socialise and travel to interesting destinations.

We are delighted to announce that the 2019 Dowling Club overseas trip will be to Nepal from 5th to 15th April 2019. We are very excited to be joining the Nepalese dermatologists for their annual meeting in Katmandu on Sunday 7th and Monday 8th April 2019, something that Professor Chris Bunker has facilitated for us. We have been asked to contribute to this meeting. We will visit the world famous Anandaban leprosy centre and then travel to Pokhara where we are planning a clinical cases meeting with the local dermatologists and a visit to Green Pastures Hospital. This was initially a leprosy hospital but now offers a range of other clinical services.

We do hope that the clinical content and the wonderful country of Nepal will particularly encourage dermatologists in training to join us for the trip. The cost of the trip (based on shared occupancy) is £1350 excluding flights from the UK and meeting registration fees. In the last two years we have been able to obtain generous bursaries from the Royal Society of Medicine AND The British Association of Dermatology. This year there will be a total of thirteen bursaries (ten RSM 7 & 3 BAD) each of £1000 (please CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS or contact Anne at Conference Plus on 01923469363 or email

In addition to the clinical component, the trip will include tours in Kathmandu and Pokhara and even the option of a flight over Mount Everest! There will be a range of possible extensions after the main trip including seven nights trekking the Annapurna circuit (from Pokhara), or a visit to Bhutan or the Golden Triangle. Please note any of these extensions can be booked separately from the main trip for friends and family who may choose to join you after the main dermatology meeting.

Pokhara. a lakeside town, is Nepal's second city, nestled at the foot of the Annapurna Himalaya. The views commanded from here of 3 of the world's 8000m peaks, are unsurpassed.

Lunch at hotel.

Afternoon visit to the World Peace Pagoda with about 30 minutes trek uphill to Stupa and later 45 minutes beautiful trek downhill to the lakeside and boat ride.

Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa; a monument to inspire peace, designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. Most (though not all) peace pagodas built since World War II have been built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. Fujii was greatly inspired by his meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1931 and decided to devote his life to promoting non-violence. In 1947, he began constructing Peace Pagodas as shrines to world peace.

For those who have difficulty in trekking we shall use a small mini bus to take you to the closest parking to Stupa and then drive back to city.

Return to individual hotels.

Rest of day & evening at leisure.

11TH APRIL 2019

Early morning drive to Sarangkot to witness sunrise at Annapurna mountains: 2 groups will take this excursion today and the 3rd group will take the excursion on the morning of the 12th April. Tea, coffee and biscuits for all at Himalayan View Hotel terrace for another relaxing view of the valley before driving back to the hotel for breakfast. For the fittest amongst you we will be offering a walk on 11th (those who prefer a more leisurely view will go on the 12th).

The view of the Annapurna Himalaya from Sarangkot is almost a religious experience. From here, you can see a panoramic sweep of Himalayan peaks, from Dhaulagiri (8167m) in the west to the perfect pyramid of Machhapuchhare (6997m) and the rounded peak of Annapurna II (7937m) in the east. At dawn and dusk, the sun picks out the peaks in brilliant colours. The main village is just below the ridge, but a set of concrete steps leads uphill to a dramatic viewpoint in the ruins of an ancient kot (hill-fort).

13TH APRIL 2019

Morning Bhutan/Homeward Bound/Golden Triangle clients to fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu (group divided into 2 morning flights). Trek group to leave separately.

Arrive at Kathmandu airport and drive to visit Boudhanath. Before this visit, enjoy best Momos (steamed Tibetan dumplings) in town, spring rolls at G Café (definitely worth trying).

Asia’s largest stupa pulses with life as thousands of pilgrims gather daily to make a kora (ritual circumnavigation) of the dome, beneath the watchful eyes of the Buddha, which gaze out from the gilded central tower. Tibetan monks in maroon robes wander the prayer flag–decked streets while pilgrims spin prayer wheels and stock up on yak butter and tsampa (roasted barley flour). This is one of the few places in the world where Tibetan Buddhist culture is accessible and unfettered, and the lanes around the stupa are crammed with monasteries and workshops producing butter lamps, ceremonial horns, Tibetan drums, monks’ headgear and the other accessories essential for Tibetan Buddhist life.

Drive to the hotel for check in. Check in time is 1400 hrs.

Later in the afternoon Visit the Pashupatinath: 6kms/4miles from Kathmandu City, Pashupatinath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple built in Pagoda Style has gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. Visitors will be permitted to view the temple from the east bank of River Bagmati, entrance in the temple being strictly forbidden to all non Hindus. Pashupatinath is the centre of annual pilgrimage on the day of Shivaratri which falls in the month of February/March. Behind the temples are the cremation grounds.

14TH APRIL 2019

Depart from Kathmandu

Optional: Everest Mountain Flight (those doing extensions will be offered the opportunity of doing the Everest Mountain Flight at another time).

Return to hotel for breakfast, followed by a morning tour of Durbar Square.

In front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom is one of three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Several buildings in the Square collapsed due to a major earthquake on 25 April 2015. Durbar Square was surrounded with spectacular architecture and vividly showcases the skills of the Newar artists and craftsmen over several centuries. The Royal Palace was originally at Dattaraya square and was later moved to the Durbar square. The Kathmandu Durbar Square held the palaces of the Malla and Shah kings who ruled over the city. Along with these palaces, the square surrounds quadrangles, revealing courtyards and temples. It is known as Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, a name derived from a statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee of Lord Ram, at the entrance of the palace.

We shall return to the hotel for lunch and check out. Please note: Check out time is 1200 noon. We will try for late check out or at least keep a few rooms to freshen up for those departing in the late afternoon/ evening.

Bhutan Extension

14–20th April, 6 night programme

Bhutan, often referred to as ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ or ‘the last Shangri La’ on earth, is situated in the lap of Eastern Himalayas between India and China. Covering an area of 38,394 sq km, the tiny Himalayan Kingdom is one of the most isolated nations in the world.

Spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and magnificent landscape has made Bhutan one of the most sought after tourist destinations.

With its beautiful and largely unspoiled Himalayan setting, wonderfully dressed local population (whose expertise in archery can be astonishing) and high end exclusivity, Bhutan really is an idyllic place to visit.
