Post-conference Extensions - Annapurna Trek, Bhutan & Golden Triangle

The Dowling Club was established by Dr Geoffrey Dowling, a London dermatologist, in the late 1940’s. The ethos of the club is to bring consultants and trainee dermatologists together in learning and social environments sharing the knowledge and experience of established specialists with those starting their training within the specialty.

A highlight of the Dowling Club programme is the annual overseas trip which combines visits to overseas dermatology departments and/or clinical meetings with the opportunity for seniors and juniors to socialise and travel to interesting destinations.

We are delighted to announce that the 2019 Dowling Club overseas trip will be to Nepal from 5th to 15th April 2019. We are very excited to be joining the Nepalese dermatologists for their annual meeting in Katmandu on Sunday 7th and Monday 8th April 2019, something that Professor Chris Bunker has facilitated for us. We have been asked to contribute to this meeting. We will visit the world famous Anandaban leprosy centre and then travel to Pokhara where we are planning a clinical cases meeting with the local dermatologists and a visit to Green Pastures Hospital. This was initially a leprosy hospital but now offers a range of other clinical services.

We do hope that the clinical content and the wonderful country of Nepal will particularly encourage dermatologists in training to join us for the trip. The cost of the trip (based on shared occupancy) is £1350 excluding flights from the UK and meeting registration fees. In the last two years we have been able to obtain generous bursaries from the Royal Society of Medicine AND The British Association of Dermatology. This year there will be a total of thirteen bursaries (ten RSM 7 & 3 BAD) each of £1000 (please CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS or contact Anne at Conference Plus on 01923469363 or email

In addition to the clinical component, the trip will include tours in Kathmandu and Pokhara and even the option of a flight over Mount Everest! There will be a range of possible extensions after the main trip including seven nights trekking the Annapurna circuit (from Pokhara), or a visit to Bhutan or the Golden Triangle. Please note any of these extensions can be booked separately from the main trip for friends and family who may choose to join you after the main dermatology meeting.

Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist stupa; a monument to inspire peace, designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. Most (though not all) peace pagodas built since World War II have been built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985), a Buddhist monk from Japan and founder of the Nipponzan-Myōhōji Buddhist Order. Fujii was greatly inspired by his meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in 1931 and decided to devote his life to promoting non-violence. In 1947, he began constructing Peace Pagodas as shrines to world peace.

Early morning wake up call, and after tea and coffee, proceed on a scenic trek (02 hours) that takes one through small villages, winding dirt trails, lush wooded forests, and steep ascents uphill to Sarangkot to witness the sunrise.

The view of the Annapurna Himalaya from Sarangkot is almost a religious experience. From here, you can see a panoramic sweep of Himalayan peaks, from Dhaulagiri (8167m) in the west puchhare (6997m) and the rounded peak of Annapurna II (7937m) in the east. At dawn and dusk, the sun picks out the peaks in brilliant colours. The main village is just below the ridge, but a set of concrete steps leads uphill to a dramatic viewpoint in the ruins of an ancient kot (hill-fort).

Afternoon Visit to Green Pastures or clinical meeting.

Morning Fly from Pokhara to Kathmandu (we shall divide the group in 2 morning flights flying between 1030 – 1130 hrs)

Pashupatinath Temple: 6kms/4miles from Kathmandu City, Pashupatinath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple built in Pagoda Style has gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. Visitors will be permitted to view the temple from the east bank of River Bagmati, entrance in the temple being strictly forbidden to all non Hindus. Pashupatinath is the centre of annual pilgrimage on the day of Shivaratri which falls in the month of February/March. Behind the temples are the cremation grounds.

Boudhanath Stupa : For hundreds of years, the Boudhanath Stupa has stood as a beacon of Buddhist belief, towering over the surrounding town as a giant mandala of peace and beauty and also giant eyes.

Built some time around the 14th century, the huge meditative monument is said to have been created just after the passing of the Buddha. The huge offering site quickly become an focal point of worship and offering in the area. The structure of the building consists of a giant dome, on the top which sits a Buddhist pyramid tower. All of this sits on top of huge steps shaped like mandalas themselves. Among the Nepalese in Kathmandu, the stupa is simply referred to as "Chorten Chenpo" which translates to "Great Tower" or just "Great Stupa".

Bhutan, often referred to as ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ or ‘the last Shangri La’ on earth, is situated in the lap of Eastern Himalayas between India and China. Covering an area of 38,394 sq km, the tiny Himalayan Kingdom is one of the most isolated nations in the world.

Spectacular mountain terrain, varied flora and fauna, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and magnificent landscape has made Bhutan one of the most sought after tourist destinations.

With its beautiful and largely unspoiled Himalayan setting, wonderfully dressed local population (whose expertise in archery can be astonishing) and high end exclusivity, Bhutan really is an idyllic place to visit.
