Mardi Gras in New Orleans
7th - 13th March 2011
What could be more exciting than being in New Orleans as it releases all its energy to celebrate the festival of Mardi Gras. The floats are sensational as they parade through the narrow streets of the historic French Quarter, each one commissioned by a different fraternity determined to inject more energy, beauty and humour than the next. Music fills the streets as bands perform, infecting the city with the party atmosphere that makes this the city of jazz and the city of the deep South.

Mardi Gras may well be the peak of our Katrina-delayed conference in New Orleans and as the city has resurrected itself we are delighted to honour plans to hold another of our stimulating and intellectually fulfilling post graduate courses in this unique city. After the frenetic atmosphere of our first 36hours enjoying Mardi Gras we will then have the chance to experience the city as it gets back to normal life.

New Orleans sits on the lower reaches of the broad, meandering Mississippi encompassing all that is best about the laid back American South. By day the elegant streets of the old French Quarter display their intricate wrought iron balconies and marvellous colonial heritage to all who wish to stroll through this very human and intimate area. Sip mint juleps or snack on po'boys or muffelletta as you unwind and let your body relax into the Big Easy.
By night all changes as the numerous bars pubs and clubs pay homage to the music that made this city the birthplace of jazz and one of the finest music venues in the world. Sit in Preservation Hall and soak up the atmosphere of Jazz's greats who have played this venue, or stroll down Bourbon or Royal Street and soak up the atmosphere and the street life of this sultry, spicy, music drenched city.

Enjoy the mystery of the city where voodoo and masquerade mix with Creole and Cajun - a city whose cemeteries are one of its most fascinating tourist attractions. Ride a street car the famous elegant garden district or hop on a traditional Mississippi paddle boat for a cruise down one of the world's great rivers. Move out to the surrounding countryside and sail across alligator swamps on air boats or lunch in a Southern Plantation House.
